ABOUT OUR PHILANTHROPY
AEPhi is proud to support three amazing charities: Sharsheret, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation, and NMDP. Sharsheret and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation were both founded by AEPhi alumnae. At Illinois, AEPhi hosts philanthropy events such as sports tournaments, NMDP drives, and themed dinners each semester to fundraise for our three amazing charities .
SHARSHERET
Sharsheret is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by young Jewish women living with breast cancer. Sharsheret, Hebrew for "chain," was founded in 2001 by Rochelle Shoretz an AEPhi alumna, who recognized the need for a breast cancer organization that would provide culturally-sensitive support for Jewish women after her own diagnosis.
Members of Alpha Epsilon Phi have supported Sharsheret's mission to support young Jewish women facing breast cancer by spreading the word through hosting fundraising events.
THE ELIZABETH GLASER PEDIATRIC AIDS FOUNDATION
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation was was founded in 1988 by AEPhi Alumna Elizabeth Meyer Glaser (Sigma Chapter, University of Wisconsin) and her two close friends shortly after Elizabeth and her husband, Paul, discovered that she, along with their two children were infected with the AIDS virus as a result of a blood transfusion. With little research being focused on the issue of pediatric AIDS, the three women sought to bring awareness and a possible cure to the innocent children around the world affected by HIV/AIDS. Through the work of the Foundation and partnerships like the one with Alpha Epsilon Phi, research and knowledge have greatly increased.
NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is a global nonprofit leader in cell therapy, NMDP creates essential connections between researchers and supporters to inspire action and accelerate innovation to find life-saving cures.
NMDP was adopted as Alpha Epsilon Phi’s national service and partner in the 2023-2024 academic year. As partners, AEPhi has added over 350 registry members – from which 5 have already been identified as a potential match for a patient in need – and one has gone on to donate life-saving blood stem cells (as of December 2024). With AEPhi’s core values being to inspire women who are dedicated to selfless service and NMDP’s mission, together we are saving lives.
AEPhi at the University of Illinois prides itself on the plethora of service events we participate in. We have monthly service events to constantly keep our members engaged in the Champaign- Urbana community. In the past, we have organized food drives benefiting local campus food pantries, partnered with X-Time, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children explore STEAM education, created blankets for cancer patients, and volunteered at our local synagogue.
Community service remains a core value of our chapter, and we are proud to continue supporting and giving back to the Champaign-Urbana community through meaningful service initiatives.
